Free template: request cancellation and return of your vehicle

Use this only after checking how your contract can be terminated. An email may serve as notice but cannot by itself establish a right to immediate release if the legal position is disputed.

Subject: Sale or Return arrangement – cancellation/return request – [registration]

Dear [legal company name],

I am writing regarding the Sale or Return arrangement dated [date] for [vehicle and registration]. I wish to [cancel/terminate the agreement in accordance with clause X, or request return of my vehicle] with effect from [date, if justified by the agreement].

Please confirm in writing the vehicle's current location, condition, mileage, keys and documents held, and a safe collection arrangement. If you contend that return is subject to charges or a right of retention, please identify the contract or legal basis, itemised sum and relevant supporting records.

I would prefer to resolve any disagreement without confrontation or avoidable expense. Please reply by [reasonable date] so that we can agree lawful collection arrangements.
